Being a manager isn’t easy, but here are some tips on how to do it successfully.
Manage with compassion. Often, employees find their managers unapproachable or intimidating, especially when they have an issue to workout. This is not the feeling you want to send throughout your office or employees; don’t get overly upset when a mistake is made the first time, but use the experience as a learning opportunity so that it isn’t made later on. This will make it easier for your employees to come to you for help.
Trust your employees to do their jobs. This is especially true during extensive projects where productivity is essential. Managers who tend not to trust their employees only micromanage their efforts, which puts a stop on productivity way too often. Trust that your employees will come to you if there is an issue, and don’t spend too much time looking over the shoulders.
Learn what motivates your team members. Get to know each one of their interests so you can figure out what motivates them to work the hardest. Discuss the future with your employees, and don’t be afraid to provide honest, realistic feedback. The more time you’re willing to put into your professional relationships, the more motivated your employees will be.
